How to Boost E-Commerce SEO of Category Pages

SEO is essentially free traffic which means free revenue! That’s the good thing about SEO, if all is optimized, then we shall see growth in the organic revenue over time.

Let’s cut to the chase, and give some advise for better eCommerce SEO of the category pages, stuff that we actually been applying for years.

  1. Application of proper Category Schema – the schema markup is huge for SEO and should be correctly placed in the code of the category page.
  2. Site speed – the site should be fast and snappy. That’s the best way to describe the speed situation. All pages must load fast, and the category pages are no exception. Fast loading means better user experience.
  3. Add unique content for each category – Google loves original content that describes the content on page in an excellent manner. A paragraph or two of engaging content will help a lot both the users and search engines to understand what’s on the page – and help it rank better over time.
  4. Internal linking to categories – the internal linking strategy should put the main categories at the top of the funnel. Work with analytics to determine these categories.
  5. Image optimization of category & products – optimized images of the category will also greatly help with better SEO and even possibly converting traffic through Google Images!
  6. URL optimization/URL silo – I am a huge fan of a longer URL that displays a clear hierarchy of the website and the categories. These could also be optimized for better SEO.
  7. Navigation/home page links – the main categories should appear in the main navigation and their names (and/or taxonomies) shall be optimized.
  8. Create supporting content – content creation should include blog posts, videos, reviews, UGC and other media. These creatives should be properly linked and placed to categories.
